Article is on 🎯 I sacrificed speed (ExpressVPN) for security (Proton). Same with e-mail and “cloud” services.

Thanks for confirming 😊 🙏

Been following your articles and learning about these issues - getting rid of Express and anything related to Google, although the latter is more tricky and time consuming. Keep them coming, most of us value right to privacy - enshrined in the federal and most state Constitutions. Honestly, if I could go off grid I would. Thanks again.

Are you only recommending the paid versions of Proton, or is the free version ok?

The free version is better than nothing! Speeds are really spotty though.

Great read. Have you tried building your own VPN? That should address many of the risks with commercial vpns.

Thank you! Yes, I have two hosted in Swiss territory with providers I trust. I felt the need to write the article for the average person who has no clue how to spin up a Wireguard server though :)

Ha. Fair point - building your own VPN is not for everyone.

It is an awesome privacy flex though. 💪

Absolutely. It’s not even the building of the server as much as it is maintaining it and monitoring it. I suppose picking the wrong provider could totally do you in, but deploying it isn’t so bad.

You’ll love this though; one of my primary servers in Switzerland is quite literally in a data center that is INSIDE a mountain. Armed guards and all. No information on client collected, I pay in XMR, DMCA ignored, they totally ignore legal requests, etc.

They even did fastflux hosting for a while, if you know anything about that. 😈😈😈

Hopefully we'll get rid of this Five Eyes human rights nightmare.

I think TOR is or was recommending you not use a VPN in combination with their browser, unless you really know what you're doing.

This is an honest question for anyone who wants to reply: I’ve started my journey of de-googling and learning about privacy. I entered the Fediverse and I just use Substack to learn a little bit more and write sometimes but as soon as I learn to do the same outside this platform, I will leave or I’ll just follow the people I have subscribed to. So my question is purely out of knowing the thoughts of people like me who just want to be left alone while taking advantage of the Internet: taking into account all the security and privacy concepts for people like us just worried about privacy, what happens with people who are using it in the wrong way? Why wouldn’t a company comply to the request of a police department to catch a pedophil@? I understand that if they can do it with one particular person, they can do it with everyone, but hey, don’t we live in a society and if we want to rip the goods sometime we also need to give up some part of our individuality? Again, not criticizing, I love the discussions that take place in the fediverse and I would love to hear more about this. Thanks! PS: I use Proton VPN because it is free and since dollars ou euros are not a possibility for me, it was a great choice.

Is BitdefenderVPN any good? How would I find out where it’s hosted?

I’m in the middle of a major technology overhaul. I’m using Proton email now instead of GMail, but I’m at the beginning stage. I’m also going to use ProtonVPN, Brave web browser and DuckDuckGo for my search engine.

Do you see any potential problems with any of the companies I plan to start using or have better suggestions?

Is there any order you would recommend for implementing all of these changes?

Are there any downsides for using ProtonVPN (paid version)? Thanks so much for all of your posts!
